Netherlands

The first part cycling

Our first report from an internet café. We’re in Maastricht. The first week has been great. The sense that we are traveling now is starting to kick in….. The coffee and cakes in Groningen were very ‘homey’.
It’s a strange moment getting the bikes outside, giving everybody a big kiss and a hug and then start riding. We had just left Groningen and had passed the ‘Witte Molen’ (White Mill) when there suddenly was a car on the path…… the Heddema family.

‘Super nice’ of you to be there Robbert. Sure enough our greetings to group 5a have been passed on.

After a nice sandwich on a bench just before Oudemolen we suddenly saw the familiar faces of three colleagues on bicycles. They joined us for a stretch until there were more colleagues standing on the side of the road. What a surprise! This, we never expected. We had a lot of fun reading the t-shirts we got. You guys are great! Just as we thought we could continue calmly there was another surprise. Our parents and grandmother were at the side of the road to give us a big hug.

The first night we stopped at a camping site in Zuidwolde. The owners of the ground were very enthusiastic about our plans. The woman gave us a lucky chain for the road. The man instantly said that we could donate the camping fee to the Noble House.

The next day we first visited Jaap (Steven’s uncle) and Cecile and the kids. That day we rode to Hummelo, where we arrived not until 8.30pm. We had a very nice ride but we were starting to feel our legs a little already.

Our goal for Tuesday’s was to get to Meijel. At the end of the day we had covered a distance of 134 km. This also was a magnificent trip along the rivers IJssel and Rijn, our first little ferry, through Germany, along the river Maas and then the little church tower of Meijel. We had a wonderful stay at Marijke’s and Hein’s.

On Wednesday we had a fantastic goodbye from Meijel. First we visited group 8 and their teacher Miss Ton. The children asked very good questions. Afterwards we had to go through a double line-up of 660 children. Just time for some small talk and then waving goodbye…… we really liked it for Engely being there as well!

So, after a one day break in Maaseik in Belgium, now we are in Maastricht. Tomorrow we will really leave the Netherlands. It’s wonderful and we are really enjoying ourselves.
